Efficient Computation of the Shapley Value for Game-Theoretic Network Centrality

چکیده
The Shapley value—probably the most important normative payoff division scheme in coalitional games—has recently been advocated as a useful measure of centrality in networks. However, although this approach has a variety of real-world applications (including social and organisational networks, biological networks and communication networks), its computational properties have not been widely studied. To date, the only practicable approach to compute Shapley value-based centrality has been via Monte Carlo simulations which are computationally expensive and not guaranteed to give an exact answer. Against this background, this paper presents the first study of the computational aspects of the Shapley value for network centralities. Specifically, we develop exact analytical formulae for Shapley value-based centrality in both weighted and unweighted networks and develop efficient (polynomial time) and exact algorithms algorithms based on them. We empirically evaluate these algorithms on two real-life examples (an infrastructure network representing the topology of the Western States Power Grid and a collaboration network from the field of astrophysics) and demonstrate that they deliver significant speedups over the Monte Carlo approach. For instance, in the case of unweighted networks our algorithms are able to return the exact solution about 1600 times faster than the Monte Carlo approximation, even if we allow for a generous 10% error margin for the latter method. c ©2013 AI Access Foundation. Efficient Computation of Semivalues for Game-Theoretic Network Centrality
Solution concepts from cooperative game theory, such as the Shapley value or the Banzhaf index, have recently been advocated as interesting extensions of standard measures of node centrality in networks. While this direction of research is promising, the computation of game-theoretic centrality can be challenging. In an attempt to address the computational issues of game-theoretic network centr...
متن کاملFast Algorithms for Game-Theoretic Centrality Measures
In this dissertation, we analyze the computational properties of game-theoretic centrality measures. The key idea behind game-theoretic approach to network analysis is to treat nodes as players in a cooperative game, where the value of each coalition of nodes is determined by certain graph properties. Next, the centrality of any individual node is determined by a chosen game-theoretic solution ...
متن کاملGame theoretic network centrality: exact formulas and efficient algorithms
The concept of centrality plays an important role in network analysis. Game theoretic centrality measures have been recently proposed, which are based on computing the Shapley Value (SV) of each node (agent) in a suitably constructed co-operative network game (for example see [1]). However, the naive method of exact computation of SVs takes exponential time in the number of nodes. In this paper...
متن کاملfinding influential individual in Social Network graphs using CSCS algorithm and shapley value in game theory
In recent years, the social networks analysis gains great deal of attention. Social networks have various applications in different areas namely predicting disease epidemic, search engines and viral advertisements. A key property of social networks is that interpersonal relationships can influence the decisions that they make. Finding the most influential nodes is important in social networks b...
متن کاملAlternative Axiomatic Characterizations of the Grey Shapley Value
The Shapley value, one of the most common solution concepts of cooperative game theory is defined and axiomatically characterized in different game-theoretic models. Certainly, the Shapley value can be used in interesting sharing cost/reward problems in the Operations Research area such as connection, routing, scheduling, production and inventory situations. In this paper, we focus on the Shapl...
